One new COVID-19 case confirmed, bringing the total to 16

Yangon—One additional confirmed case of COVID-19 was reported in Yangon, taking the total number of cases to 16, according to the statement by the Ministry of Health and Sports on 1 April.

A 63-year-old woman from Yaykyi Township in Ayeyawady Region tested positive for the virus. The woman with no travel history, welcomed back her son arriving at Yangon International Airport via Dubai on 15 March. She stayed at North Okkalapa Township and suffered from tiredness for around two weeks. On 30 March, she was admitted to North Okkalapa People’s Hospital as she had a temperature and suffered from fatigue. 

She was being treated at the hospital. According to the lab result, she caught the virus. She will be moved to Waibargi Specialist Hospital. She is under intensive care as she has diabetes.

On 1 April, there was a circulation of news on social media that the patient (Case-16) hide her history. In addition, there were rumors that the patient had died. There was widespread criticism of the patient’s deliberate lie of contact and travel history, from doctors. 

Dr. Win Thandar Phyu, Medical Superintendent from North Okkalapa People’s Hospital wrote a post on facebook: “The 16th Patient has been sent to the ICU at Waibargi Hospital and her son to the quarantine center. Behave humanely. Don’t hide travel history”

Yangon Region MP Zaw Lwin from North Okkalapa Township Constituency-1 said: “The news that the patient (Case-16) died is false. There is no plan for the lockdown of the entire ward as the ward has around 7,000 populations. Mini lockdown is under way. Now Nilar-1 road is closed. We plan to move more than 20 persons living in the dormitory to the control center.”

There were 36 new patients under investigation from 6 pm on 31 March to 6 pm on 1 April.  The 14 patients being treated at the respective hospitals are in stable condition while one patient is at the intensive care unit of Waibargi Specialist Hospital, according to the statement.

On 31 March, one confirmed patient (Case-5) suffering from nose cancer died.
