Myanmar Thanaka to be nominated on UNESCO list

A plan is under way to nominate Myanmar Thanaka on the World Heritage List of UNESCO, according to a workshop held at the National Museum of the Department of Archaeological Research and National Museum under the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs on January 20. 

On behalf of the secretary of the Committee for Conservation and Promotion of Myanmar Intangible Culture Heritage, U Ko Ko Naing, Deputy Director-General of Department of Archeological Research and National Museum, delivered an opening speech. 

Dr. Hla Toe, Chair of the Scholars Group explained the fact about the origin and history of Myanmar Thanaka. 

The secretary of Myanmar Intangible Culture Heritage Conservation and Promotion Committee gave talks on the time table for the nomination of Myanmar Thanaka on the representative list. The talk show and the round table discussion on the nomination of Myanmar Thanaka tradition on the UNESCO list, were held.

Those attendees discussed evidences of Myanma traditional Thanaka, herbal condition of Thanaka, traditional Thanaka festivals and the handing down of Thanaka custom and tradition. 

The workshop was attended by experts and members of Intangible Culture Heritage Conservation and Promotion Committee, officials of the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Sports, Myanmar Thanaka Association, experts and businesspersons.
