Myanmar resumes rice exports to China

Myanmar has resumed suspended rice exports to China at Muse 105th mile on Myanmar-China border, said U Than Oo, Secretary of Bayintnaung Brokerage Center. 

“Now Myanmar exports around 50,000 bags of rice to China a day via Muse,” he added. 

Due to the spread of coronavirus in Hubei of China on 7 January, trade flows were suspended. 

Myanmar is exporting rice to nearly 60 countries via border trade and sea routes. 

Till 21 February of 2019-20 fiscal year, Myanmar earned 373.354 million US dollars from exports of 1.298 million tons of rice and broken rice, according to Myanmar Rice Federation. 

During this period, Myanmar exported 898,000 tons of rice to 59 countries, earning nearly 270 million US dollars. 

Rice exports to China hit over 320,000 tons worth over 97 million US dollars, accounting for over 36 per cent of the total rice exports. 

In addition, Myanmar exported over 400,000 tons of broken rice to 52 countries, fetching over 100 million US dollars. 

Broken rice exports to Belgium amounted to 43,000 tons worth over 23 million US dollars, accounting for over 21 per cent of the total broken rice exports. 

During five months of the current fiscal year, Myanmar exported 178,000 tons of rice and broken rice worth nearly 47 million US dollars via border trade. It accounts for 13 per cent of the total exports. 

The prices of high-quality rice remains unchanged. Following the dollar appreciation and high demands for rice, the price of a bag of low-quality rice has increased by around Ks 2,000.

Currently, the price for a bag of rice (25-mark) is between Ks 20,000-20,500, a bag of rice (5-mark), Ks around 23,500 and a bag of broken rice, between Ks 16,000- Ks  18,000.
