Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand face discrimination due to COVID-19

Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand faced discrimination and thy were fired from their work according to teams helping for Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand.

As there is COVID-19 outbreak in the Samut Songkhram province where majority of Myanmar migrant workers situated, majority of migrant workers faced discrimination according to Moe Gyoe helping Myanmar workers’ affairs.

“Myanmar migrant workers are being labeled for spreading COVID-19. If Myanmar migrant workers on public transport, they were forced to pull down from the bus and put under 14 day quarantine. In the quarantine centers, they were denied given blankets, pillows, and mosquito nets. Only the very thin blankets were given in the cold weather,” said Moe Gyoe.

The news on a factory in Thailand drove out Myanmar migrant workers from its factory and abandon in other provinces was published in the Bangkok Post on December 22.

According to the Bangkok Post, the workers were abandoning in a forest in Rayong province as police were going to investigate the factory in Samut Songkhram province. 23 Myanmar workers were put on a bus according to the news. Among them, 9 migrant workers left the bus and the rest 14 went to Samut Prakan province but they were denied entry at the other factory. Among them, only 6 had passports. They were taken swab tests and placed under quarantine. 

According to news from Thailand, more than 1000 people were infected with the virus and Maharchaing was under lock down.
