Ministry provides over 160,000 older people with over Ks5,000 m

In 2018-2019 fiscal year, the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement supported 168,578 older people with Ks 5057.340 million. 

Myanmar passed the Elderly Pension Law in 2016 and has started the elderly pension system for people aged 85 and above, since 2017, according to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement. 

With the aim of ensuring the income security of the elderly, the ministry has started introducing the elderly pension system for people aged 85 and above, in 2017-2018 FY. In 2017-2018 FY, there were 43,439 elderly entitled to the elderly pension scheme.

The number of older population in the urban area is higher than that in the rural area. Magway, Bago, Mandalay, Sagaing, Ayeyawady, Yangon and Mon sees the highest growing number of older population, according to a survey released by the Immigration Department in September, 2017. 

In Myanmar, the number of populations aged 60 and above is around 4.5 million. The country’s total number of population is expected to reach 13 million by 2050. This survey is conducted using data from the 2014 nationwide census. Myanmar’s age structure will be similar to that in Singapore. The population aged 60 and above will account for around 20 per cent of the total population. In 2050, the older population will be almost equal to the number of children under 15, according to the survey. 

According to the research findings, the total population increased by 1.4 per cent between 1973 and 2014 annually. The number of older population aged 60 and above increased at a rate of 2.4 per cent annually. In 2030, Myanmar will face a decline in the total number of population in the major regions and states and the highest growth of the older population aged 60 and above if the current situation continues.
