One suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a woman in the Myanmar Plaza car park. The suspect reportedly confessed that he committed the crime because he needed money to pay off debts related to a construction project.
The arrested suspect was identified as Myat Thura Kyaw. He was apprehended together with his wife at around 12:30 p.m. on August 6 near the entrance gate of Myitnge–Htonbo junction on the old Yangon–Mandalay road.
According to his statement, he killed the victim, Daw San San Aye, because he owed her money and was in urgent need of cash.
Authorities are still working to apprehend another male suspect (under investigation) who was allegedly involved in the attack.
The incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on August 5. The victim, Daw San San Aye, a resident of South Okkalapa Township, was returning home from Myanmar Plaza with U Alatt Khan Yae, a resident of Tamwe Township. When they reached their parked car in the plaza’s car park, two men attacked them with knives.
Daw San San Aye died from multiple stab wounds, while U Alatt Khan Yae sustained knife injuries. The case was opened at Bahan Township Police Station under Penal Code Sections 302/326/114.
Security forces’ investigation revealed that the two suspects had arrived at Myanmar Plaza in a grey Toyota Vitz at 1:57 p.m. The victim’s Toyota Harrier arrived at 2:02 p.m., after which she and U Alatt Khan Yae went inside the plaza.
The suspects then moved their vehicle to park near the victim’s car. At 4:27 p.m., Daw San San Aye and U Alatt Khan Yae returned to their vehicle, whereupon the two male suspects stabbed the victim. When U Alatt Khan Yae tried to fight back, one of the suspects also stabbed him.
After the attack, the two suspects fled toward Kabar Aye Pagoda Road, hired a taxi, and escaped. Questioning the taxi driver revealed that he had dropped them off near the 10-Mile bus stop on Pyay Road. CCTV footage of the suspects was shown to the victim’s daughter, who identified one of them as Myat Thura Kyaw, a person working with her mother in a construction project and residing in INNO CITY, who also owed her mother money.
Following this lead, police arrested Myat Thura Kyaw together with his wife on the old Yangon–Mandalay road. Efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining suspect.
