Low pressure area may cause heavy rain, strong wind, flash floods and landslides: DMH

Heavy rain may pour down in middle and upper areas of Myanmar, and the Rakhine coast due to the low pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal and strong wind, flash floods and landslides may occur, announced the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).

According to the observations made by the DMH on October 20, the low pressure area is formed over Central Bay of Bengal and it is forecasted to move initially Northwestwards then North- Northeast Awards.

“We forecasted that the low pressure area will be a little stronger but it will not be intensified into a storm. It may become a strong low pressure area. He will move to Indian coast and head northeast. It will move to the North Bay of Bengal after approaching the Indian coast. It will reach between western states of India and Bangladesh,” said Hla Tun, Deputy Director of the DMH.

Rain or thunderstorms will be scattered in lower Sagaing, Mandalay and Magway regions, Kayah, Kayin and Mon States, from fairly widespread to widespread in upper Sagaing Region and Kachin, Chin and Rakhine states, and likelihood of isolated heavy falls may occur. Squalls with moderate to rough seas are likely at times off and along Rakhine and Myanmar coasts. Surface wind speed in squalls may reach (35-40) m.p.h. Wave height will be about (7-10) feet off and along Rakhine and Myanmar coasts.
