DAWEI- Some locals staged a protest during State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu’s visit in Taninthayi Region yesterday to demand the removal of Taninthayi Region Chief Minister and the Chairman of National League for Democracy (NLD) in Taninthayi Region as well as the regional Commerce and Finance Minister.

The State Counsellor will be there for a three-day visit in Taninthayi Region. She arrived in Myeik Township, Taninthayi Region, yesterday and held a public meeting at the Pale Yadana Hall in No.7 Basic Education High School.

In front of the Pale Yadana Hall, protesters chanted that “Ah May[ Mother - popular moniker for the State Counsellor] take action against Taninthayi government committee for corruption, dismiss the NLD’s Chairman of Taninthayi Region, Chief Minister Dr Le Le Maw, Finance Minister Phyo Win Tun and replace of Taninthayi Region Government Committee members.”

“In my opinion, the Taninthayi Region Chief Minister had failed her capacity to uphold the Constitutional Law. Later, she lost the trust and support of the public and also broke out the policy of peace process as well as issuing wrong orders. We also reviewed that she didn’t understand the incumbent government’s administrative mechanism. So, we don’t believe the current Chief Minister and her cabinet members. If the administrative mechanism will change, the people will be trusting the government as well as the nation will improve,” said Po Anm from 88 Generation Peace and Open Society in Myeik District.

When the State Counsellor met with the public, she directly received the complaints against the Regional Government Committee.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi replied to the queries raised by one of the locals that she understood the public demands. One of the reasons for visiting the Taninthayi Region was to admonish the Regional Government Committee.

The State Counsellor responded that the purpose of her visit was to look into the complaints.

The locals including the protesters weren’t allowed to attend the public meeting held in Pale Yadana Hall. So, they waited for a long time in front of the hall to meet the State Counsellor. However, they failed it because the State Counsellor left from the hall after holding the public meeting.
