Lists of parliamentary candidates for the 2020 general election have been announced at the offices of election sub-commissions in respective states and regions across Myanmar, beginning August 30.

Officials from those sub-commissions said parliamentary candidates were announced nationwide under the instruction of the Union Election Commission (UEC).

“The announcement at those offices will remain until the election comes. The lists can also be viewed even at the offices of township and village election sub-commissions,” said Aung Myo Lwin, secretary of Sagaing Region Election Sub-commission.

He said Sagaing Region has 652 candidates from 17 political parties and 33 independent candidates.

Final candidate lists were announced two weeks after applications for proposed parliamentary candidates were scrutinized from August 11 to 17.

As the lists were announced after the approval of the respective state and region sub-commissions, those excluded from the lists have no more chance to appeal.

“Appeal is final at the state / region sub-commission level. But the UEC can still deal with it under section 53 of the election law. But, it seldom happens,” said Kyi Myint, chairman of Yangon Region Election Sub-commission.

For the upcoming general election scheduled on November 8, 93 political parties fielded 6,742 candidates while 281 others enlisted as independent candidates. Some of them were excluded on  the final candidate lists for disqualification as stated by the election law.
