TOKYO (The Japan News/ANN) - 71 of the 124 seats were won by the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito in Sunday’s House of Councillors election.

The Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito won 71 of the 124 seats contested in Sunday’s House of Councillors election with all winners confirmed Monday morning. While the two ruling coalition parties won a solid majority of seats put to a vote, the coalition lost six of the 77 seats it held prior to the election.

 The LDP won 57 seats, one more than the 56 it secured in the 2016 upper house elections, including a seat won by an independent committed to the party.

 However, it did not come close to the 65 seats it won in the landslide 2013 election. Incumbent LDP lawmakers lost in eight constituencies, including in Miyagi, Shiga and Oita prefectures.

 Komeito won all seven of the constituencies it contested. Combined with the seven seats it won through proportional representation, the party won 14 seats, matching its highest-ever total.

 The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ) won eight seats through proportional representation — the second most after the LDP — and won 17 seats overall, up from the nine seats it was defending. The Democratic Party for the People (DPFP), which was defending eight seats, lost two seats and won six seats overall.

 The CDPJ and DPFP, the successor parties to the now-defunct Democratic Party, won a combined 23 seats, well below the 32 seats the Democratic Party won in the 2016 upper house election. Eight independent candidates jointly fielded by opposition parties, including the CDPJ and DPFP, also won seats.

 The Japanese Communist Party lost one of the eight seats it was defending. Nippon Ishin no Kai increased its total by winning 10 seats, including seats in the Kanto region. The Social Democratic Party retained its one seat up for reelection. Among minor parties, the newly formed Reiwa Shinsengumi won two seats through proportional representation. NHK Kara Kokumin o Mamoru To (party to protect the people from NHK) also won a proportional representation seat.
