Inland Water Transport (IWT) department under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications is planning to run new cargo vessels in Yangon River, sources said.

The IWT is also repairing the Saw Nanda cargo vessel at Dala shipyard and will be finished this month.

Cargo Transport Sub-department under the IWT started the cargo services on March 9 2017 and is running with Sin Hai (6) and its cargo trailer CBRC0001 from Thilawa International Port to Shwe Pyi Tar (Mottama Port) and Shwe Me Port.

The IWT runs eight times of cargo services with 6,400 tons weight of 640 containers in 2016-17 FY, 21 times of cargo services with 17,420 tons weight of 1,742 containers in 2017-18 FY and 54 times of cargo services with 52,240 tons weight of 5,224 containers in 2018 mini-budget year.

The IWT owns six shipyards, in which state owned vessels have been repaired and built. The department also officers services to repair and build private use vessels with specified prices.

The IWT provided two used vessels and one new vessel currently building in Japan with the aid of Japanese government to use in southern Rakhine State.
