The funeral service of well known veteran politician Dr. Aung Khin Sint was held at the Yayway cemetery on October 4.

He was a former political activist and a prisoner. He had also won the National Literature Award winner. He passed away on Tuesday at Panglong Hospital in Yangon at the age of 86.

“It was a great loss of us. In the fight for democracy, he made huge sacrifices. We have to shoulder his unfinished duties,” said David Hla Myint from 1990 elected MPs group.

He won a seat in the 1990 parliamentary elections under the then  National League for Democracy (NLD), representing Mingalar Taung Nyunt Township in Yangon. He joined the 1993 national congress convened by the military government as an elected representative, but he criticized the congress as a sham. He was arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison that same year as a result.

A minute of silence was observed at the funeral and his coffin was covered with the National League for Democracy (NLD) flag. Family members, MPs, politicians, doctors, and people from literature societies attended the funeral.

“He was a very gentle and calm person. He had chances to live comfortably with his education and wealth. But, he participated in the people’s movement and led the people on the fight to be free from bad legacy,” said MP Yan Aung of Mingalar Taung Nyunt Township.

He passed away on the 9th day of his hospital treatment.

He was born in Pakokku township, Magwe Region, in 1935 and graduated with a medical degree from Yangon Medical University. He then earned a degree in community medicine in Manchester, UK. He won the National Literature Award for his medical book, “Prevention and Treatment” in 1972.
