Former National League for Democracy (NLD) Central Committee member Daw Sandar Min has joined the National Democratic Front (NDF) and will contest a Pyithu Hluttaw seat in the upcoming elections.

She announced her decision during a media briefing in Mandalay on 29 August, saying she officially became a member of the NDF on 8 August 2025.

Daw Sandar Min explained that she had remained loyal to the NLD until it’s deregistration, but with the party no longer legally recognized, she chose to align with the NDF.

“The NDF’s policies are what convinced me,” she said. “They embrace liberalism in politics and socialism in economic policy, which I can accept. After working closely with the party leadership for two months, I decided their philosophy, attitudes toward the people, and approach to the military were acceptable. It is not extremist, and I felt comfortable joining.”

She also noted that although the NDF originated as a breakaway from the NLD, she had not supported it in the past. Her decision to join came only after studying the party’s internal operations and leadership.

The NDF will allocate her constituency in Yangon Region under the First Past the Post (FPTP) system. Daw Sandar Min, who previously served in the Pyithu Hluttaw, said she is committed to returning to parliament.

“I want to serve my country in parliament. My health and ability are still strong, and I believe I can contribute at this critical time,” she stated. On election security, she expressed confidence in government assurances that candidates’ safety will be protected under the law and that voters should not fear casting their ballots. 

Daw Sandar Min has called on voters to actively participate in the upcoming election, stressing that their votes are crucial in shaping the country’s future. “I believe in this election, and that is why I am contesting,” she said, urging voters not to feel discouraged or angry. “Even though the country has faced difficulties in recent years, important events and ceremonies have continued to take place. Likewise, the election is a significant event for the country and can be held safely.”

She emphasized that choosing not to vote could allow unwanted candidates to enter parliament. “If you don’t vote, people you don’t like will represent you. Your vote ensures that the people you trust can enter parliament. That is why I appeal to you to cast your vote on Election Day,” she added.

Like Daw Sandar Min, Dr.Myoset Thway, who resigned from the position of General Secretary of the People's Progressive Party (PPP), also joined the NDF.

Daw Sandar Min, a member of the National League for Democracy (NLD), won the Zambuthiri Township Pyithu Hluttaw seat in the 2012 by-election. In the 2015 general election, she was elected as a Yangon Region Hluttaw representative from Seikgyi Khanaungto constituency and later served as chairperson of the Hluttaw’s Finance, Planning and Economic Committee.
