Flooding and landslides have occurred in Launglon Township, Dawei District, Taninthayi Region, since September 26 due to heavy rainfall, with several people reportedly missing.

Residents said around 20 villages in the lower part of Launglon Township have been affected by flooding and landslides. Rising floodwaters have also covered sections of roads, delaying rescue efforts.

“About 20 villages in the lower part of Launglon have been affected by landslides and flooding. The rain has been extremely heavy, and water has overflowed onto roads, delaying rescue operations. We have heard that a child and several other people are missing,” a Dawei resident said.

Although authorities and volunteer rescue organisations have been travelling to the affected areas, they have reportedly been forced to wait because roads are submerged by floodwaters.

Heavy rainfall across Taninthayi Region has also caused river levels to rise. The Taninthayi River has risen again and is reportedly approaching its danger level.

A weather expert warned that the area could experience unusually high rainfall, strong winds and flash floods as a small-scale storm system is expected to pass near Dawei and surrounding areas. Firefighters and volunteer rescue teams have been urged to remain vigilant and assist affected communities, while residents have been warned that flash floods from mountainous areas can occur suddenly.

As of September 27, areas from Dawei to Kawthaung, including eastern parts of the region, remain among the areas facing a high risk of severe weather.
