Electricity sector tops the list of FDI this FY

Till November of this fiscal year, the electricity sector topped the list of the foreign investments with over 503 million US dollars, according to the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration.

From 1988-89 FY to date, the total FDI in the electricity sector amounted to over 21681.672 million US dollars.

The individual power consumption reached 263 kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2015-16 FY, 301 kWh in 2016-17 FY, 335 kWh in 2017-18 FY, 379 kWh in 2018-19 FY and 432 kWh in 2019-20 FY. In five years, the individual power consumption increased by 169 kWh, according to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.

The power generation reached 15,965 million units in 2015-16 FY, 17,867 million units in 2016-17 FY, 20,055 million units in 2017-18 FY, 22,879 million unit in 2018-19 FY and 27,300 million unit in 2019-20 FY.

From 2016-17 FY to 2018-19 FY, the annual power production from the hydropower sector was 11,224 kWh and the natural gas sector, over 9,200 kWh, according to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.

The country’s electricity access increased from 34 per cent in 2016 to 45 per cent in August, 2019. Plan is underway to electrify 50 per cent of the country by December this year. Under the National Electricity Plan (NEP), the ministry has set a goal of electrifying the whole country by 2030.

There are 51 State-owned and private-owned power plants with an installed capacity of over 5,600 MW.

The ministry plans to increase its power production by around 1,200 MW in the year to come.
