Dr Nay Soe Maung, the son-in-law of former Senior General Than Shwe, who is serving a three-year prison term, has been charged with a new case under Section 66(d) of the Telecommunications Law and is now facing legal action at the Pyigyitagun Township Court in Mandalay, according to sources.

Dr Nay Soe Maung was arrested and detained at the Pyigyitagun Township Police Station in Mandalay on October 23, 2024, for inciting and spreading propaganda on social media with the intention of undermining national peace and security.

He was then charged under Section 505 (a) of the Penal Code at the Pyigyitagun Township Court, and on January 16, 2025, the prison court sentenced him to three years in prison.

Dr Nay Soe Maung is the son of retired Major General Tin Sein and the son-in-law of former Senior General Than Shwe. His son is Ko Nay Shwe Thway Aung.

Dr Nay Soe Maung is also involved in charity and social work, and his Facebook page posts are often criticized by Tatmadaw-supported Telegram channels.

Dr Nay Soe Maung wrote a condolence message when Dr Zaw Myint Maung, who served as the Chief Minister of Mandalay Region during the NLD government era, passed away.

He wrote, “I respect and pay my respects to you. During your tenure, you were able to make the people happy and inspire the people of Mandalay. I respect you for making Mandalay a Smart City. When I come to Mandalay, I walk around the moat in the morning and evening and see the works of you and the mayor. I remember your achievements for the people and pay my respects. May you rest in peace.”
