Myawaddy- Exporting of corn from Myawaddy-Thailand border town Myawaddy has been stopped since September 1.

Myanmar exports corn to Thailand from February till August 31 with tax exemption to fulfill the corn requirement of Thailand. But, the time now coincide with the time when corn harvesting season in Thailand. To protect the national interest, Thailand has increased the tax on exporting of corn. Therefore, Myanmar couldn’t export corn to Thailand.

“Thailand said if 75 percent of tax can be given on corn, we can export corn to Thailand. Corn farmers from Myanmar have no more corn left for export and as a result, they are not at a loss like last year. Last year, Myanmar corn farmers faced a great loss. The Corn farmers association has also warned corn farmers about the news. Besides, Yangon market demands corn,” said Thin Thin Myat, chair of Myawaddy border trade association.
