Dr. Zheng Zhihong, Minister-Counsellor of the Embassy of China in Myanmar, stated that preparations are underway for the construction of the Kyaukphyu-Kunming railway, emphasizing the need for a stable and peaceful environment to support the project.

He shared these remarks during the China-Myanmar Media Exchange Forum held on December 2 at the Wyndham Grand Hotel in Yangon Region.

The railway is a critical initiative for both nations, described as a significant part of the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor. Minister- Counsellor Zheng highlighted that upon completion, the project will contribute to Myanmar's economic growth and improve living standards. During a meeting between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, both sides agreed to pursue high-quality, stable construction of the corridor under the Belt and Road framework.

Dr. Zheng added, “China hopes Myanmar can achieve stability swiftly, creating a conducive environment for project implementation. Relevant departments are currently making initial preparations. As I’ve emphasized, a favorable environment is crucial for the success of this project.”

The Minister-Counsellor also addressed issues in Myanmar's northern regions, reaffirming that China’s stance remains unchanged. He noted ongoing discussions between armed groups and the Myanmar military, with five rounds of talks already held. China is encouraging adherence to ceasefire agreements and supporting efforts to maintain peace and stability in northern Myanmar.

Regarding Chinese security companies operating in Myanmar, Dr. Zheng clarified that these businesses are legally established with government approval and operate in compliance with Myanmar’s laws and regulations. He dismissed social media rumors about their operations, stating that China opposes any propaganda designed to harm China-Myanmar relations.

Dr. Zheng reiterated China's commitment to fostering cooperation and mutual benefit between the two countries. “China maintains a friendly policy toward Myanmar, focused on practical collaboration across various sectors. The China-Myanmar Economic Corridor will be further accelerated, and Chinese investments in Myanmar will help improve the country’s economy and living standards,” he stated.

The forum also included discussions on activities planned to commemorate the 75th anniversary of China-Myanmar diplomatic relations in 2025, particularly in the media sector.
