Cherry flowers are blooming in Taunggyi in Shan State in the early days of January. Cherry flowers bloom only once in a year and it only grows over 3000 and 4000 feet above sea level. As Taunggyi is surrounded by high mountains and geographically situated above 4000 feet and has a moderate climate, cherry flowers bloom there.
In Japan, they hold annual cherry blossom festivals and broadcast the best places to view cherry flowers. Like in Japan, Taunggyi may play a role in supporting the local tourism industry and at the same time, education work on conservation of cherry trees should be conducted according to a Cherry Kyaw from Living Earth Green Network group.
Cherry flowers can be seen along Naga hill in eastern side, in the Taunggyi medical compound, and at the Shan Literature and culture hall, at the BEHS (2) compound and roadside but there are less flowers with pale colours. Beside Taunggyi, cherry flowers can be viewed at Pinglon, Loilin and Kyaingtung.
