As rice was sold for 200 Chinese Yuan per bag at the Chinese temple near the Bamar community in Laukkai on November 7, a large number of people rushed to the place and jostled for the purchase of rice resulting in trampling and injuries, local sources said.
At 8:00 am on November 7, large crowds were reportedly there to buy rice. As soon as the door of the Chinese temple was opened, the queuing crowds jostled to buy it, trampling each other. And consequently, some sustained injuries, the local sources added.
In a video posted by some locals on social media, thousands of locals were waiting to buy rice at the place where rice was to be sold for 200 Yuan per bag.
"I've already bought it. There were thousands of people, but only 100 bags would be sold,” said Mai Tun Kyi Jr. on her Facebook account.
Local residents said because of the sale of only a truckload, only a few of the locals could buy and the majority didn’t have the chance to buy.
Ryan Ryan also wrote on his Facebook account, "Yes, about a ten thousand people are waiting, but the amount of rice to be sold is not that large."
On November 3 also, a 12-wheeled truck arrived from China and sold rice for 250 Yuan per bag, attracting lots of buyers.
Currently, there are tens of thousands of residents are being trapped in Laukkai. Meanwhile, local media reports say that the returnees are being trapped in the road in Laukkai.
