YANGON- Ye Thein, Chairperson of Buthidaung Township’s National League for Democracy (NLD) went missing since December 11th, according to family members and NLD’s Spokesperson Dr Myo Nyunt.

Ye Thein was planning to hold a show of support on December 12th for State Counsellor that was then defending Myanmar against The Gambia at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

He reportedly visited a village in Buthidaung Township ain order to arrange provisions for a rally. However, contact was lost with him since the afternoon of December 11th, according to Dr Myo Nyunt.

Currently, a report concerning the Township NLD’s chairperson has been informed to the authorities and are now investigating the missing person. But no one knows what exactly had happened to him, said to Dr Myo Nyunt.

A sibling of Ye Thein told The Daily Eleven on December 12th that they have yet to receive more information about his status and that they were extremely saddened by the disappearance of their older brother.

“Armed groups detain people that are not concerned with the fighting, causing trouble with civilian lives. If they[armed groups] do not carry out such acts, the locals may even support them,” said Dr Myo Nyunt.

The rally Ye Thein was supposed to organize did not occur in Buthidaung Township as he went missing.

The Arakan Army, Ta’aung National Liberation Army and Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army jointly announced on November 28th, saying that they had pledged to fully support the trial against Myanmar at the ICJ and investigation of ICC for its crimes, supporting the claims that the Tatmadaw have been violating the Bengalis right to self-identity.
