Several businessmen, including U Chit Khaing, chairman of Eden Group of Companies, have been released from prison, according to sources close to them.

U Chit Khaing, who had been serving a sentence for alleged corruption in tax payments related to the Tikyit coal-fired power plant, was released from Mandalay’s Obo Prison around 7 am on April 12.

He was arrested in April 2022 alongside former Union Ministers U Ohn Win and U Ohn Khaing, and Deputy Minister Dr. Tun Naing — all of whom served during the National League for Democracy (NLD) administration.

U Chit Khaing leads Eden Group, a conglomerate with interests in oil and gas, banking, construction, and agricultural products.

Reports also indicate the release of Zay Thiha, son of Zay Kabar Group owner U Khin Shwe, from Yangon’s Insein Prison.

In addition, several edible oil businessmen have also reportedly been released, though details remain unclear.

“The edible oil businessmen have also been released. We don’t know the details yet,” said a member of the oil business community.
