International flights and chartered flights from Siem Reap, Cambodia can land at Bagan-NyaungU airport as it was upgraded as a customs aerodrome, sources said.
President Office announced the Bagan-NyaungU airport has been recognized as a customs aerodrome.
According to Sub-section (a) of Section 53 of Myanmar Aircraft Act, the Bagan-NyaungU airport was assigned as a customs aerodrome to handle international flights. Ministry of Transport and Communications can allow the landing and departing of international flights based on the requirement of aviation travel, safety and security and basic infrastructure.
“Demand for international flights and chartered flights between Siem Reap and Bagan is higher and domestic or international airlines can have the chance,” said an official.
Bagan had been recognized in world heritage list by UNESCO recently and it was well-known internationally before it was included in the world heritage list. The international airlines took interest to fly the direct flight as more international travellers would be interested to visit Bagan.
Recently, Bangkok Airways seek permission to fly Bagan-Bangkok direct flight and Department for Civil Aviation (DCA) replied to Bangkok Airways that they are not allowed the direct flight between Bangkok and Bagan at the present.
