A floating Thingyan festival will be held during Myanmar's traditional Thingyan period in 2023 at Inle Lake in Nyaungshwe Township, southern Shan State, according to locals of Nampan.

According to locals, the floating Thingyan Festival will be held starting from the end of March and the place where the festival will be held is being prepared.

The Inle floating Thingyan festival was held for the first time in 2019 under the previous government, and will be held again in this year. From 2020 to 2022, the Thingyan festival could not be held in Inle Lake.

In 2019, many domestic and foreign tourists visited, and it was a floating Thingyan festival that attracted many people. Starting in 2020, the Thingyan festival had not been held for three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Inle floating Thingyan festival was held at the entrance of Inpawkhon Village, south of Nampan Village, Nyaungshwe Township, and the stage building that was held in 2019 is already there. According to the civic organizations in Inle Lake, the Shan State Government will provide a budget of 150 million kyats to hold the Thingyan festival.

A civil society organization pointed out that holding the Inle Thingyan festival is wasting money, and some people supported the idea that the festival should be held for the redevelopment of tourism and employment in the area.

It has been more than two years since Inle Lake in Nyangshwe Township had to stop tourism and local businesses due to the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. Since early 2023, there has been a resurgence of travellers, and since they are mostly local travellers, locals said the income is less compared to the period when foreign visitors arrived.

Inle Lake is visited by many foreign tourists, and tourism is a major industry that the locals rely on.

Local businessmen are hoping for the redevelopment of tourism in Inle Lake.
