U Maung Weik, one of the two main witnesses who testified against imprisoned Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in corruption case, has been released, sources said.

Facebook of Sae Paing Company wrote that its owner U Maung Weik returned home on June 29.

"I am happy that I am at home. My mother is also happy..." U Maung Weik wrote at the beginning.

U Maung Weik testified that he had to pay Daw Aung San Suu Kyi US$550,000, and in connection with these two cases, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was ordered to serve three years in prison together.

In 2014, Sae Paing Construction Company was established and provided financial assistance and donation to relevant government members in order to make the business smooth. In 2017, he became close to Daw Khin Khin Oo, who was working at Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's home. In May 2018, he visited Daw Aung San Suu Kyi with the help of Daw Khin Khin Oo, and he testified that he personally handed over US$100,000 to Daw Khin Kyi Foundation in a black paper gift bag in front of U Shauk San and U Hla Myo. The testimony of his video file was broadcasted by MWD TV at 8 pm on March 17, 2021.

In the video file broadcasted by MWD TV, he put US$150,000 into a black paper gift bag and personally gave it to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in 2019. In February 2020, another US$50,000 was given to her at her house. In April, he personally gave Daw Aung San Suu Kyi US$250,000, and that no one was around when it was given, he testified.

In addition, in the case in which Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, the former Chief Minister of Mandalay Region, was charged with corruption, a lawyer close to the court said that U Maung Weik testified in court that he had donated medical expenses and visited Dr. Zaw Myint Maung for three times, but he was unable to meet with Dr. Zaw Myint Maung.

U Maung Weik accused Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, who is suffering from cancer, of having to support the medical expenses of his treatment in Thailand and he testified during the hearing in the courtroom on February 18 that the donation was made.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Information on July 6, former Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was receiving medical treatment at the Bumrungrad Hospital, in Thailand while he was in a political position during 2019. An entrepreneur working on projects in Mandalay Region came to meet him and gave him US$100,000 in three installments to cover the cost of his medical treatment.

Maung Weik, the owner of Sae Paing Construction Company, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for drug offenses in 2008 and was released from prison in 2014.

The two main witnesses, who testified against imprisoned Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, were former Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein and U Maung Weik.

U Phyo Min Thein testified in court that he had to bribe Aung San Suu Kyi with US$600,000 and seven visses of pure gold.

In addition, the video file in which U Phyo Min Thein testified that he was paid US$600,000 and seven visses of academy gold was revealed at the press conference of the State Administration Council on March 23, 2021.

He said that he visited Daw Aung San Suu Kyi during his tenure as Yangon Region Chief Minister. He attended the monthly regional and state chief ministers' meeting. When attending such a meeting, the government usually assigns vehicles and drivers for use by the chief ministers. U Phyo Min Thein said that after the meeting, he alone visited Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's home three or four times.

"At the time of this visit and meeting, I gave her silk, food, cash in US dollar and gold placed in appropriate bags regarding the activities carried out in Yangon Region. In December 2017, I visited Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's residence with the vehicle provided by the government along with my personal assistant U Maung Maung Kyi for the first time. When we arrived at the compound of the house, I told the driver and my personal assistant to wait in the vehicle. I took silk, US$200,000 and 2.5 visses of academy gold bars, which were placed in the food bags and put it in Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's hands myself for personal use or for the party or for Daw Khin Kyi's foundation," U Phyo Min Thein said.

Also, in April 2018, he visited Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's residence for the second time and met with her. When they met, the driver and personal assistant were kept waiting in the vehicle, just like the first time. After that, he said that he gave silk, US$200,000 and 2.5 visses of academy gold bars to her.

"I took it alone and entered Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's home to meet her and give her US$200,000 and 2.5 visses of academy gold bars personally to support and take care of the activities being carried out in Yangon Region and to use it as she needed. In addition, I visited the Shan Monastery near Hmawby Htauk Kyant when I went to pay the respect to the Mong Pong Sayadaw. The Sayadaw gave me a nine-inch tall Buddha statue to give to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Therefore, in June 2018, I visited Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's home again just like the first time and the second time. The driver and personal assistant were told to wait on the vehicle, and then I took the Buddha statue, silk, US$200,000 and 2.5 visses of academy gold bars to give her. I gave US$600,000 and seven visses of academy gold bars in total," U Phyo Min Thein said.

U Phyo Min Thein said that, in consultation with his wife, he gave the academy gold bars collected to be used for the family's diamond and gold jewelry business to some entrepreneurs in exchange for dollars and to give it to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

U Win Myint and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi were charged with improperly influencing the Union Election Commission in the 2020 general election under Section 130(a) of the Penal Code and sentenced to three years in prison. Even with the same charge, U Phyo Min Thein was prosecuted for improperly influencing the relevant regional election commission in the 2020 general election, but he was fined 100,000 kyats only.

On February 17, the Dagon Township Court ordered former Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein to pay a fine of 100,000 kyats in a case charged under Section 130(a) of the Penal Code for improperly influencing the relevant regional election commission in the 2020 general election and unlawful practices.

In a press conference on June 12, 2021, regarding whether U Phyo Min Thein has been prosecuted for corruption or not, it was reported that as a result of the statements made by former Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein against some senior government officials, including former state counsellor. In response to Eleven Media's question about how will those who paid bribes be dealt with, or will they be exempted without taking any action, Major General Zaw Min Tun, Deputy Minister for Information, said that no one is above the law and it must be according to the law.

State and regional chief ministers who served under the previous NLD government, ministers of the Yangon Region Government and mayors have been charged with corruption, but former Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein, who was accused of improperly influencing the relevant regional election commission and prosecuted under Section 130-A of the Penal Code for unlawful behavior, was only fined 100,000 kyats.

After U Maung Weik, one of the two main witnesses who testified against Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for corruption, was freed, U Phyo Min Thein's condition is not yet known.
