MYITKYINA- Another landslide occurred again at former jade mining in Whaykha village, Hpakant Township, Kachin State, yesterday early morning destroying 12 houses, company-owned building, and backhoe.

“We paid compensation to 39 houses situated in the incident for their transfer. So, no one stays at home. 12 houses, company-owned building, and a backhoe were destroyed due to the landslide. We frequently warned the houses and jade mining companies against flash landslides. We are now inspecting the jade mining sites which can be collapsed,” said Kyaw Min, an administrator from Whaykha village.

The second time landslide occurred was in Whaykha village on July 10th. That’s why the Hpakant Township Natural Disaster Management Committee launched a field trip at the incident on July 11th.

This is the third landslide.

The first landslide had occurred in an old jade mining site near Whaykha village, killing near 200 scavengers, 54 were injured and 19 were missing on June 2nd.

The Security and Border Affairs Minister from Kachin State held a press conference about the deadly landslide on July 2nd. He said that they supervised the jade mining sites. In Hpakant, landslide and mudslide usually occur and it was common in the rainy season. Although warning notice about the landslide had been planted in jade mining sites, the scavengers ignored it. There was no fencing at the sites. If fencing would be built at the sites, it can reduce the dead.

The Natural Disaster Management Committee had formed six teams with to prevent deadly landslides in Hpakant region.

The committee has recorded the dangerous sites and reported their weekly record to the Kachin State Government Committee.

An instruction with ten points has been issued in Hpakant for the closing of mining sites from July 1, up to three months.
