Around 100 political parties will stand for 2020 general election, and 78 parties will conduct election campaigns across Myanmar, said Union Election Commission member Myint Naing.

He revealed the information during a press conference held at the office of UEC in Nay Pyi Taw on February 6.

"In 2020 election, about 100 political parties are likely to compete. There are 78 parties that will be canvassing for votes across the country. And 21 parties will be conducting election campaigns only in regions and states," Myint Naing said.

For those political parties that will conduct election campaigns across the Union, they will have to report to the UEC that they have canvassed at least 1,000 members within 90 days after party registration. For the parties that will campaign only in regions and states, they must have canvassed at least 500 members.

Myint Naing said: "The law prescribes that every party must contest for at least three parliaments. Otherwise, they will have to dissolve."

There are over 37 million eligible voters for the upcoming general election due to be held later this year. Kachin State has the largest number with over 10 million while the Union Territory (Nay Pyi Taw) has over 800,000.
