Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) will seek cooperation and advice from civil society organizations from various fields for its efforts for prison system reform, said AAPP Yangon office in charge Aung Myo Kyaw.

"Many prisoners are in jail for drug cases. There are activists working for drug abuse, HIV, sex workers, former political prisoners and women affairs. The main thing is key population. We will try for prison reform," he said.

AAPP officials held a meeting with Open Myanmar Initiative (OMI), an organization tasked with monitoring Myanmar parliaments.

OMI executive director Aye Kyaw said they had agreed to cooperate with AAPP in making reviews for prison reform and getting parliamentary data.

"For prison system reform, we must have the prison law amended. Then, parliamentary role has come. We agreed to cooperate because OMI leaders are also former political prisoners," said Aye Kyaw.

Currently, most prisons in Myanmar are largely crowded and nearly half of prisoners are serving their terms for drug-related cases, according to a 2018 report issued by Myanmar National Human Rights Commission.

AAPP is a civil society organization working for ensuring there is no political prisoner, prison reform and human rights.
