A passenger bus skidded and overturned near the 38-mile post on Kyonepyaw-Yegyi road in Ayeyawady region on the morning of October 24 causing one passenger killed and 33 others injured, sources said.

“The bus crashed into a motorcycle parked beside the road and careened onto the opposite lane. It skidded and overturned on its left side. All passengers sustained injuries. A woman sitting at the front of the bus was launched outside and crushed under the bus. She was killed,” said Police Captain Khaine Kyaw Oo, head of Kyonepyaw Township police station.

A total of 16 out of 33 injured passengers are sent to Kyonepyaw Hospital as inpatients and the rest are admitted to the hospital as outpatients, he said.

“We detained the driver for his careless driving. He was also sent to the hospital as he had injuries. We have asked the doctor to confirm whether he was drunk or not in the time when the accident took place,” said the police captain.

Kyonepyaw fire services department, CSOs and locals helped the rescue operation.

“All passengers have injuries. Some of them suffered minor injuries and some of them have major injuries. The bus also crashed into the trees nearby. A woman was dead but the bus helper placed underneath her is still alive. We have to lift the bus to carry him and the woman dead body. Ambulances from free funeral services and other CSOs help the injured people to send the hospital,” said Than Zaw Lwin from the Kyonepyaw fire services department.

Police Sub-inspector Shan Kyaw lodged a complaint against the driver under Section 304 (a)/ 337/ 338 of the Penal Code at Kyonepyaw Township police station.
