83 multipurpose cyclone shelters to build in Myanmar

A total of 113 multipurpose cyclone shelters are finished built and 83 new multipurpose cyclone shelters will be built, according to Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

The government announced development aid policy in January this year. It set policy to reach achievement of continuous development and reduce damages made by natural disasters. The government drew Myanmar Sustainable Development Plan (MSDP). It is planned to implement Myanmar Action Plan on Disaster Risk Reduction (MAPDRR). A total of 32 projects are included in the MAPDRR and some of them will be implemented next year, said Dr Win Myat Aye, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

The project bank, which is organized projects from the ministries, is based on the MSDP and prepared to reduce disaster risk. It will spend billions of Kyats from national disaster management fund to build 113 multipurpose cyclone shelters. The ministry installed single-sideband (SSB) modulators to send warnings in advance in disaster areas and flood precaution arrangements and emergency responses programmes are implemented with a loan from World Bank, said the minister.
