A total of 83 parliamentary candidates will contest in Taungoo District for the upcoming multi-party democratic general election scheduled for December 2025, with only Taungoo Township in Bago Region included in Election Phase (1), according to the Taungoo District Election Sub-Commission.
Among the 83 candidates, 33 are contesting for the Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House), 25 under the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system for the Region/State Hluttaw, and 25 under the Proportional Representation (PR) system. There will be 28 constituencies under the FPTP system and 5 constituencies under the PR system, according to the election officials.
In Taungoo Township, the current voter list includes 176,324 eligible voters, including 16,305 ethnic minority voters. After the review process, corrections will be made for missing names, duplicate entries, or errors. The revised voter list is expected to be re-announced in November, according to an official from the Taungoo District Election Commission.
Voting will take place in 64 wards and villages within Taungoo Township, with 191 polling stations planned, though 142 polling stations are currently ready to operate.
Parties contesting in the Taungoo constituencies include the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), People’s Pioneer Party (PPP), People’s Party, Myanmar Farmers Development Party, Nationalities Brotherhood Federation, Union Peace and Unity Party, and the Shan and Nationalities Democratic Party (White Tiger Party), along with one independent candidate, according to the Taungoo District Election Sub-Commission.
For the 2025 general election, which will be held under a Mixed-Member Proportional (MMP) system, Election Phase (1) will take place in Taungoo Township, Phase (2) in Thandaunggyi and Yedashe Townships, and Phase (3) in Oktwin, Phyu, and Kyaukkyi Townships, according to the same source.
