Myanmar reported 16 Covid-19 cases on May 4 and there are still over 7,600 patients nationwide receiving medical treatment, according to the Ministry of Health and Sports.

A total of 2,056 lab samples were tested for 24 hours from May 3 to 4, and 16 people tested positive for the virus. Eight more patients recovered and were discharged from hospital on May 4.

Since the outbreak till May 4, there were 2,583,157 samples tested, 142,858 cases reported, 3,209 dead and 131,997 patients discharged from hospital.

The Medical Research Department is planning genetic tests on the Covid-19 patients returning from foreign countries, according to a coordination meeting on Covid-19 prevention and control held in Nay Pyi Taw on April 27.

During the meeting, the union minister stressed the need to prevent the third wave of the Covid-19 outbreak and the spread of mutated viruses as neighbouring countries such as India, Thailand and Bangladesh see surges in cases. He also gave an instruction on systematic testing on the Covid-19 patients who tested positive after returning from other countries to check any new variant of virus.
