Myanmar, which is rich in bird species, has begun welcoming 12 globally threatened bird species as migratory birds to the Moeyungyi wetland wildlife sanctuary during the current winter season, according to reports.
Due to the El Niño phenomenon, authorities have been monitoring possible changes in the arrival patterns of migratory birds at wetlands and wildlife sanctuaries during the winter season. Migratory birds have now begun arriving at Moeyungyi lake and its associated wetland areas.
During the winter season, globally threatened migratory bird species, including the Black-headed Ibis, Greater Adjutant, Painted Stork, River Tern, Black-necked Stork, Lesser Adjutant, Black-headed Gull, cranes, eagles, and other waterbirds, have been recorded at Moeyungyi wetland wildlife sanctuary in Bago Region. More than 30,000 migratory birds visited Moeyungyi Lake during the previous winter season.
In addition to Moeyungyi wetland wildlife sanctuary, migratory birds, including globally threatened waterbird species, arrive annually at several protected areas across Myanmar, including Lampi marine national park, Inle lake, Indawgyi lake, Meinmahla Kyun, and Salin Wat Thae lake.
