China Datang Corporation plans to implement additional energy projects in Myanmar to support the country’s energy sector, the company told Eleven Media.
The company said it intended to use the Tapein (1) Hydropower Plant in Momauk Township, Kachin State, as a strategic base for developing further projects in Myanmar.
China Datang has also completed preliminary assessments of hydropower, wind power and solar energy resources in the Tapein River Basin. Plans have already been drawn up for projects incorporating these energy sources, the company said.
In addition, the company plans to develop solar power projects in several locations, including Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay and Bhamo. These projects will be implemented when conditions are favourable and the timing is appropriate.
However, investment in Myanmar’s energy infrastructure currently faces a number of challenges, according to the company.
Geopolitical developments, security concerns and challenges related to social stability have complicated the investment environment. The Russia-Ukraine war, conflicts in the Middle East, intensifying competition among major powers and the imposition of unilateral sanctions have also affected the global landscape, it said.
Despite these challenges, Myanmar’s infrastructure sector remains under development, while capacity in the energy sector is still limited. China Datang said it would work to address these difficulties and establish a mutually beneficial partnership between the two countries.
