Thai police have seized a large quantity of counterfeit cosmetics, including products widely used in Myanmar, from warehouses in Thailand, according to Thai media reports.
The counterfeit products included Vaseline skin-lightening cream, Clear shampoo and Garnier skin-lightening cream.
Thai media reported that police raided two warehouses along Bang Pla Road in Na Di Subdistrict, near Bangkok, on October 9, discovering a large quantity of counterfeit cosmetics.
The operation was allegedly run by a Chinese national, who was arrested along with three Myanmar workers and two people who were unable to provide documents proving their nationality. However, reports on the arrests contained a discrepancy in the total number of people detained.
The counterfeit cosmetics were reportedly being sold at low prices through Thailand’s online shopping platforms, including Lazada, Shopee and TikTok. At the time of the raid, the suspects were packing products ordered by customers.
The Chinese national will face legal action for counterfeiting, while the others will face charges related to illegal employment and failure to notify the authorities of a change of employer, according to reports.
Thai authorities have warned consumers to exercise caution when purchasing and using such cosmetics, as counterfeit products may contain prohibited chemicals that could pose health risks.
A few days earlier, counterfeit Pigeon baby bottles and teats, which are also widely used in Myanmar, were reportedly seized in Bangkok, according to Thai Enquirer.
