The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has been opened in Bago Township, Bago Region, to conduct 24-hour monitoring and ensure a timely response in the event of flooding, as the water level of the Bago River continues to rise above the danger level, according to departmental sources in Bago.

The EOC has been established at the office of the Bago Region Red Cross Supervisory Committee, where the Bago River water level, potential flood risks and emergency situations are being monitored around the clock.

According to a 12:30 p.m. statement issued by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology on September 2, the Bago River had risen to 917 centimeters, exceeding the danger level of 880 centimeters. The water level was about 37 centimeters, or slightly more than one foot, above the danger level and had risen further compared with the department’s 6:30 a.m. report.

At present, water has entered some wards and roads in Bago, with flooding also reported at several sections of the old Yangon–Mandalay road, according to local residents.

In addition, some residents from low-lying wards who are facing difficulties remaining in their homes due to flooding are being relocated to safer areas, according to local volunteer organizations.

Local volunteer groups, together with members of the Bago Fire Services Department, are providing necessary assistance and rescue services to residents who need to be evacuated because of the flooding.

If the flood situation worsens, the EOC will coordinate with relevant departments and organizations to minimize damage and losses, facilitate the timely evacuation of residents and carry out emergency assistance and rescue operations, according to sources.

As the Bago River remains above the danger level, relevant authorities are continuing to closely monitor the river’s rising water level and rainfall conditions.
