The Ayeyawady Region Government has issued an emergency notice urging residents to evacuate and remain on high alert after a breach in the Ngawun Dam raised the risk of flooding in Laymyethna Township and surrounding areas.
According to the regional government, at around 10:45 pm on July 30, the force of the river current caused an approximately 20-foot breach in the Ngawun Dam embankment, allowing river water to flow into the protected area to a depth of about 2.5 feet.
Authorities said the water entering through the breach could flow into Myitkyo Lake to the east, Chaung Zauk, Sayae Kone Stream, and the Da Ka River.
The government has instructed residents in low-lying areas, including farmland and neighborhoods in Laymyethna, to evacuate immediately to higher ground, factories, schools, religious halls, or designated relief camps. Residents have also been advised to prioritize moving important documents, valuables, medicines, food supplies, elderly family members, and children to safe locations, and to switch off the main electricity supply in their homes to reduce the risk of electrical hazards.
The regional government further urged anyone requiring assistance to immediately contact ward and village administrative bodies, rescue teams, or fire service personnel. It also called on the public to remain calm, follow official emergency instructions, and evacuate to safe locations without delay.
