Shop buildings surrounding Aung San Stadium in Mingalar Taung Nyunt Township, Yangon Region, are currently being demolished, according to local sources.

“The demolition work only started recently,” a resident living in the area said.

It is reported that a coordination meeting regarding the demolition and auction sale of old government-owned buildings within the Aung San Stadium compound was held on June 26 at the Ruby Hall of National Indoor Stadium (1) in Thuwunna, Thingangyun Township, Yangon Region.

During the meeting, Deputy Minister for Sports U Nyi Nyi, who chairs the auction sale committee, delivered opening remarks. Officials from the Department of Sports and Physical Education presented reports on the history and location of Aung San Stadium, the buildings slated for demolition, the formation of working committees and subcommittees, plans for the systematic auction and demolition of old structures and sports facilities, and arrangements for auctioning department-owned buildings and clearing shop premises. Discussions were coordinated and reviewed accordingly.

The centrally located Aung San Stadium is set to undergo a major renovation and redevelopment project. It was reported in late November 2025 that the stadium would be upgraded into a modern venue with a seating capacity of 25,000 spectators.

To facilitate the redevelopment, an Aung San Stadium Upgrading and Construction Committee has been formed to oversee the project aimed at transforming the stadium into a 25,000-seat facility.

Under the committee structure, the Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs will serve as chairman, the Union Minister for Construction as vice chairman, and the Deputy Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs as secretary.

In 2022, current President Senior General Min Aung Hlaing visited the stadium and reportedly instructed officials to upgrade the venue to a standard capable of hosting Olympic-level sporting events.

Previously known as the BAA (Burma Athletic Association) Stadium, the venue was officially renamed Aung San Stadium on October 17, 1953, in honor of General Aung San following Myanmar’s independence.

Construction of the stadium began in 1908 and was completed in 1910. A 400-meter running track was added in 1935.

The stadium also served as the host venue for the Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games in 1961 and 1969.
