Police arrest two men for stabbing taxi driver 31 times and stealing his vehicle in Thanlyin Township

Two people who killed a taxi driver and robbed his vehicle in Thanlyin Township, Yangon Region have been arrested along with evidence, according to sources.

On October 5, 2025, at 5 pm, U San Thein, a resident of No.3, Yan Pyay 18 Street, Yan Pyay Ward, Thaketa Township, left home in a taxi he was driving and did not return home until 9 pm. Since his mobile phone was switched off, his family contacted Thaketa Township Police Station for help. The police coordinated with other police stations to conduct an investigation. On October 6, at 11:45 am, the body of U San Thein was found with 31 stab wounds in a garbage dump on the left side of the road between Milepost No. 8 mile 7 furlong, and mile 9 of the Thilawa Six-lane Road in Ale Ywa Village, Let Ye San Village Tract, Thanlyin Township. The Thanlyin Township Police Station has opened a case under Section 302/392 of the Penal Code.

Efforts were made to identify and arrest the perpetrators. The perpetrators were identified as Htet Shine Zaw, a resident of Sitpin Kwin Village, Thanlyin Township, and Thet Wai Oo, a resident of Pale San Pya Village, Thongwa Township. Htet Shine Zaw was arrested at 5 pm on October 6 in the compound of Dhamma Yaung Chi Monastery in Ah Mu Htan Ward along with the vehicle that was missing in the incident. Thet Wai Oo was arrested at 8:50 pm that night from the dormitory where he lived.

The two men allegedly got into a taxi driven by U San Thein at 8:10 pm on October 5 at the Kyaik Khauk Pagoda Festival in Thanlyin Township. They were drunk and argued with the driver for the taxi fare when they got near the irrigation gate at the Thanlyin-Kyaik Khauk Pagoda Road. When Htet Shine Zaw attacked the driver using a scissors and the driver attacked him back with a screwdriver. Thet Wai Oo got hold of the screwdriver and stabbed the driver.

When the driver died, Htet Shine Zaw drove the vehicle and dumped the driver’s body on the Thilawa Six-lane Road. The vehicle’s license plates and other related items were found near Sitpin Kwin Village. Police recovered two vehicle license plates from Chaung Thit Kwin area near Sitpin Kwin Village, along with related items, a mobile phone belonging to U San Thein and a pair of scissors with a 6.5-inch blade.

It is reported that effective action will be taken against Htet Shine Zaw and Thet Wai Oo, who killed the taxi driver and robbed the vehicle, in accordance with the law.
