Myanmar to seek positive trade talks with US after Trump announces 40% tariff on imports

Regarding the letter sent by US President Donald Trump to Chairman of Myanmar’s State Administration Council (SAC) and Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing concerning trade matters, SAC Spokesman Major General Zaw Min Tun stated that Myanmar’s government would engage in positive negotiations and responses, hoping to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.  

"The Myanmar government’s stance on this letter is, first, to engage in positive negotiations and responses. Second, we hope that these discussions will lead to results that benefit both sides," said Major General Zaw Min Tun.  

US President Donald Trump had sent a notification letter to SAC Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, stating that the US would impose up to a 40% tariff on Myanmar’s exports. The new trade tariff rates will take effect starting August 1.  

Major General Zaw Min Tun added, "The letter mentions the US’s desire to engage in trade with Myanmar and the existing trade deficits. In summary, the US will impose a 40% tariff on Myanmar’s exports. In response, Myanmar has requested the US to reduce tariffs on goods imported from Myanmar. Additionally, the letter also mentions opportunities for Myanmar to make investments in the US. There is also mention of possible negotiations regarding tariff rates. We have received this letter positively."  

Regarding trade volume between Myanmar and the US, Major General Zaw Min Tun said that in the 2023-2024 fiscal year, trade amounted to $701.9 million, while in the 2024-2025 fiscal year, it was around $588.3 million.  

It is reported that under US President Donald Trump’s import tariff policy, several countries face varying tariff rates. Bangladesh is subject to a 35% tariff, Bosnia 30%, Cambodia 36%, Indonesia 32%, Japan 25%, Kazakhstan 25%, Laos 40%, Malaysia 25%, Myanmar 40%, Serbia 35%, Tunisia 25%, South Africa 30%, South Korea 25%, and Thailand 36%.
