The Ministry of Home Affairs responded that an argument broke out among prisoners in Pyay Prison, but there was no beating, fighting, or shooting involved.
This statement was made in response to inquiries from the BBC regarding reports that gunfire had been used due to a prison riot that occurred on the morning of February 23 in Pyay Prison.
The Ministry of Home Affairs elaborated, saying, "The incident occurred when a responsible prisoner attempted to stop a prisoner charged under Section 505 from entering a restricted area, leading to an argument between them. Other prisoners charged under Section 505 who were at a nearby clinic intervened and joined the dispute, resulting in some pushing and pulling. The staff managed to bring the situation under control. There was no beating or shooting involved. For the act of arguing and disobeying orders, disciplinary action will be taken within the prison in accordance with the law."
Meanwhile, the Political Prisoners Network of Myanmar (PPNM) reported that on the morning of February 23 in Pyay Prison, located in Bago Region, an incident of beating took place, during which five political prisoners sustained injuries. Following this statement from PPNM, which was cited by the BBC and some exile media outlets in their reports about Pyay Prison, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued its response and clarification.
