
More than 100 people suffered from food poisoning after eating biryani at Chaungcha Village in Tatkon Township, Nay Pyi Taw, according to local residents and some social organizations.
On the morning of September 17, at around 10 a.m., biryani, chicken and potato curry, and duck egg and eggplant curry were served to villagers as part of a donation in Chaungcha Village, Kyatthugin Village-tract in Tatkon Township, Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory. By the evening, symptoms of food poisoning, such as diarrhea and vomiting, began to appear among those who ate the food.
“Many people who ate the food were affected. However, there is no longer any cause for concern,” said a local resident from Tatkon.
Those affected by food poisoning included 56 inpatients and 50 outpatients at the 100-bed hospital in Tatkon, five inpatients at the Nay Pyi Taw Children's Hospital, and four inpatients at the 300-bed Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital. The Ministry of Health reported that the condition of all patients is improving.
In the evening, emergency response teams of health officials and workers were dispatched to the village. Additionally, on September 18, an emergency response team from the Nay Pyi Taw Public Health Department, led by a Deputy Director of Infectious Diseases, and a medical team from the 300-bed Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital also joined the efforts to control the outbreak.
The Ministry of Health emphasized that when offering food donations to those affected by natural disasters, donors should ensure that the food is freshly prepared and hygienic. It also urged donors to deliver food through township supervisory committees and management groups to ensure proper hygiene standards. Health officials working in temporary relief camps were also advised to monitor the cleanliness and safety of the food being donated.
