The Union Election Commission (UEC) has announced that it will take action against 16 people, including former President U Win Myint, former State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and former Election Commission Chairman U Hla Thein, in related with the 2020 general election under the existing laws from November 15, according to a statement on MRTV on the evening of November 15.

According to the statement, the UEC has issued a report on the election process and the findings of the 2020 multi-party democratic general election. It found that 16 people including former President U Win Myint, former State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi former UEC’s Chair U Hla Thein, former Minister of the Union Government Office U Min Thu, former members of the UEC U Myint Naing and U Than Htay, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung (former Chief Minister of Mandalay Region) and Dr. Myo Aung (former Chairman of Nay Pyi Taw Council), committed dishonest acts against the provisions of the existing laws in assigning sub-commissions, assisting in the commission of this crime and in the case of military polling stations, an official from the relevant sub-commission threatened to violate and obstruct the self-imposed obstruction of duty in accordance with the existing law, intimidation of the person in charge of the relevant sub-commission regarding the advance voting of persons aged 60 and above, violation of the election by forcing the relevant Ward / Village Tract Administrator to sign a petition to include those who are not entitled to vote according to the rules and relevant Hluttaw Election Law and By-laws, interfering in the election process to win the NLD and involving in cases of fraudulent use of ballot papers by November 7, one day before the election. They are being prosecuted in accordance with the existing laws from November 15 this year, according to the statement.

In addition, it said the UEC has repealed the results of the 2020 multi-party general election and effective action is being taken against the perpetrators and those involved preventing free and fair elections by violating the existing laws and relevant Hluttaw election laws.
