Narcotic drug production and smuggling have increased during the Covid-19 pandemic, said Police Lieutenant General Aung Win Oo, director general of Myanmar Police Force.

The police chief made the remark during the 22nd Myanmar-Thailand Virtual Bilateral Meeting on Drug Control Cooperation held on November 24.

As global countries impose travel restrictions during the crisis, drug manufacturing and smuggling are increasing. Particularly, water routes are used in smuggling, according to international drug seizures. It can be reviewed that drug smugglers are taking advantage of the current global changes and situations, he commented.

Myanmar focused on the effort to achieve good results and achievements in response to the political declaration and plan of action & target issued by the 62nd CND meeting. Despite success in the drug control and prevention sector, there are still challenges to other sectors. P2P production and smuggling cases could be exposed under bilateral cooperation, he said.

The police chief stressed the need to continue cooperation in findings over chemicals from which narcotics can be transformed.

He also called for continued cooperation in information sharing in combating all related sectors in drug production and smuggling. Myanmar is always ready to cooperate in all regional and global countries and organizations in combating narcotics, he added.
