Ministry to grant agricultural loans to farmers affected by COVID-19

Yangon—Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation will provide cash assistance and loan the farmers affected by COVID-19 and give advice for market exploration, said U Hla Kyaw, Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation at a work coordination meeting at the minister’s office in Nay Pyi Taw on 5 May.

On 5 May, the Livelihoods Recovery Committee held its work coordination meeting for the implementation of remedy schemes for the possible impacts caused by COVID-19 on agriculture, livestock, fishery and rural sectors and the implementation of rehabilitation works.

Under the government’s COVID-19 economic remedy plan, the ministry will carry out knowledge dissemination, implement cash assistance and agricultural loan schemes for income-losing farmers for the timely growing of paddy in rainy season, give advice for production and market exploration and implement cash for work program, the deputy minister added.

The departments under the working committee need to implement the short-and long-term plans for the respective sectors.  

The deputy minister called on the officials to carry out the preplanning in order to step up the livelihood rehabilitation works after the containment of infectious diseases, create jobs in agro-based small and medium-sized businesses, mitigate the impacts on agricultural and livestock production works and carry out the successful implementation of works after the reviews of different regional situations.
