The Rural Development Department is adopting a water purification system in 25 villages in Ayeyawady Region by treating water from rivers and creeks.
The project started after a pilot project was successfully implemented in the previous year.
“When the heat becomes intense in summer, evaporation rate increases sharply. Lakes dry up quickly following public use as well as evaporation. Moreover, water shortages occurred because more migrant fishermen came to live near those lakes. So we started to adopt a water purification system in villages blessed with rivers and creeks. In the 2018-2019 mini-budget period, a pilot project was implemented in Chaungwa Village which had to collect water from other villages. When the system was adopted, there is no water shortage in that village. In the current 2019-2020 fiscal year, we have launched 25 water purification systems after the success of our pilot project,” said Thant Zaw Lwin, deputy director of the Rural Development Department.
The project started in February this year and water distribution is expected to start in 22 villages by the end of April.
