The heavy shelling which injured 20 students from a basic education school in Buthedaung Township in Rakhine State, is a hideous act, according to a statement by Myanmar Teachers’ Federation (MTF).

On the morning of 13 February, a heavy shelling hit the compound of a post-primary school in Khamwaychaung village in Sannyinwai village-tract in Buthedaung Township in Rakhine State. Due to the explosion, 20 students playing in the front of schools were wounded. Of them, three students got severe injuries. The school building was severely damaged. The MTF is deeply saddened by the news.

The war-affected children’s suffering is put on record as a very hideous act when Myanmar children day is being celebrated nationwide on 13 February.

They become the innocent victims of war among the conflicts like politics, race, military. It is an unfair for the children. As the children and students are the country’s future and human resources, enabling children to have access to safe and secure learning by means of physically and mentally and to grow up freely and peacefully, is the important duty of all Myanmar citizens, the statement adds.

Relevant organizations need to give remedies to students for their physical and mental injuries. It is of great importance to avoid the similar tragedy in any region of the country in the future, the statement says.

The MTF earnestly called on the relevant organizations to avoid the fights in the compound of religious, education and health buildings, protect educational staff, health staff and students from the wars and seek the solutions to the political and racial conflicts through negotiations rather than military means.
