YANGON- Rainclouds caused heavy rain and thunderstorm in Yangon yesterday night as well as torrential rain flooded roads in some townships.

The rain lasted at least 2 hours long.

“The main reason is the rainclouds as day temperature increased and it caused the rainclouds which left the heavy rain. If the rainclouds, storms happening in Bay of Bengal and whirlwind coming from the western part will pass the upper region, there will be more rain. Moreover, the combination of cool and wind winds caused the heavy rain,” said Dr Kyaw Moe Oo, Director-General from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.

The south-west monsoon completely left from Myanmar since September 26th.

Rainclouds occurred in October and November mostly caused not only heavy rain but also strong wind.

These clouds also produced lightning and other dangerous weather phenomena, such as tornadoes or thunder strikes.

The Meteorology and Hydrology Department announced that heavy rain will be widespread in eastern and southern parts of Myanmar coming two days.

Yesterday heavy rain flooded roads in some townships such as Tamwe, south Oakkalapa and Thingangyun, according to the dwellers.

Likewise, some townships faced blackout due to torrential rain and there had been traffic jams because traffic lights weren’t working.

Although the famous Yae Kyaw Thadingyut Lighting Festival was opened yesterday, there were a few merrymakers due to the heavy rain. So, the sellers faced difficulties.

The Yae Kyaw festival takes place from October 13th to 17th along Yae Kyaw and Bogyoke streets in Pazundaung Township.
