Yangon has around five million eligible voters for 2020 General Election, according to the Yangon Region Election Sub-commission.

Tin Maung Aye, Secretary of Yangon Region Election Sub-commission said: “The region sub-commission has submitted the list of around five million eligible voters to the Union Election Commission. The sub-commission will release the exact number of eligible voters when it gets the UEC’s directive. The compilation of eligible voters list is based on the population census taken by the General Administration Department.”

The year 2019 is designated as the voter list compilation year. There was no plan to hold by-election this year, Myint Naing, the spokesperson of the UEC told the Daily Eleven on October 1.

From July to September, the UEC carried out the compilation of voters in cooperation with the General Administration Department and Immigration Department. The UEC will made updates to the voter lists every month.

Due to managerial difficulties, the UEC is unable to complete the compilation of voter lists in some conflict-hit regions and some other regions during the designated period.

UEC Chair Hla Thein said the UEC called on all election sub-commission to hold the election with five standards (independence, fairness, transparency, credibility and the compatibility of the election result with the people’s desires).

The UEC has declared that it will hold the 2020 General Election at the end of 2020.
