YANGON-The Yangon Region Government Committee is going to build over 26,000 housings in Twanty Township for the squatters, says Nilar Kyaw, Yangon Region’s Minister of Electricity, Industry and Transport at 11th regular meeting of Yangon Parliament held yesterday.

MP Kyaw Zeya from No.2 Constituency in Dagon Township inquired about the plan on completion of 2,208 apartments and 8,000 apartments which are being built for Yangon squatters. He also wanted to know the aim of accommodation for Yangon squatters being implemented by Yangon Metropolitan Development Public Co;Ltd.

Nilar Kyaw answered the queries raised by MP Kyaw Zeya that the Yangon Metropolitan Development Public Co;Ltd was building 26,182 low-cost housing units in Twanty Township, on the embankment of Panhlaing River connecting with the Hlaing Thar Yar Township aiming to improve the living standard of the socio-economic lives of the squatters. Plans were underway to sell housing for the squatters via instalment payments.

On behalf of the Yangon Region Government, Yangon Metropolitan Development Public Co;Ltd had signed a framework Agreement with Berjaya Land from Malaysia in 2017. And then, Urban and Housing Development Department under the Ministry of Construction is now implementing the project and they are going to submit the project to the Myanmar Investment Commission after taking the approval of the Union Government Committee.

“For tenants in Yangon Region, the Public Housing Sale Committee sold totaling 2,208 low-cost apartments aiming to fulfill the housing requirements. Moreover, the Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Development Bank (CHID Bank) provided home loans for the buyers by offering 15-year loan. The banks also received ODA loans from the Japanese government and then they advanced the ODA loans to home buyers with 8.5 percent interest rate,” said minister Nilar Kyaw.

At present, 264 houses were located at the Shwe Pyi Thar Township and plans are underway to build 60,000 housing units in Shwe Pyi Thar, Hlaing Thar Yar, Dagon Seikkan, South Dagon Township, eastern Dagon Township and Shwe Pauk Kan Township, according to Nilar Kyaw.

Those housing units will be built on the government-owned land and it will be sold through the loan of Microfinance. Therefore, the land must be regarded as the government’s land and homebuyers can buy the units through the home loans.

There are around 400,000 squatters in Yangon Region and up to 70 percent of them owned smart cards.
